6 Things I will miss about this summer

Back-to-school already. Each year, as many of my southern friends clog my Facebook feed with their first day of school photos in early August, I am reminded of the things I will miss about summer when ours draws to a close in a few weeks.

New England weather is fickle, especially here on Cape Cod where we poke out into the Atlantic just far enough to take a nice beating. Our winters are brutal; and summer is often looked at as our very welcomed, much earned, reward. The thing with summer is that is just isn’t long enough. Granted, we have ninety days from the last day of school until our first day of school; but still. 90 days. That simply isn’t enough.

In the summer, we spent long, leisurely days at the beach. Often arriving with our breakfast in hand to stake out the best spot.

I could spend all day here.

Sometimes, we do. Cape Cod sunsets are gorgeous in the summer.

I’ll miss enjoying a delicious cold brew coffee. Winters here are so cold, I can’t imagine drinking an iced beverage!

I’ll miss the beautiful lilies and my beloved Pink Flamingos. {The Pink Flamingos are really for my neighbors, who love to stare in our yard.}

Most of all, I’ll miss having The Boy home most of the day. The realization that this is our last summer before he’s a Kindergartener makes my heart ache. Soon, his decisions on simple things like what to wear and what to eat will be based more upon the influence of friends, and less about what The Texan and I may want him to choose. He’s growing up quicker than I thought he would. I’m seeing that more now; particularly when he’s telling a story using the word ‘like‘ as a filler word.

Realizing that your child is growing and becoming more independent is tough to swallow.

  1. Wow, Cape Cod looks so gorgeous. I’m actually looking forward to the end of summer if you can believe it. I live in the deep south, so our summers are four straight months of extreme heat, unbearable humidity and bugs, bugs, bugs. I’ve been here my entire life and I’m still not used to it. Despite all that, I wouldn’t want to face down a New England winter. You got us beat there. :)

    • We lived in Central Florida before moving to Cape Cod – I know all about the summer humidity! UCK! That is one thing that I do not miss!

  2. We still have six more weeks of summer ! Let’s not write it off !

    • I know! It’s crazy how quickly the days will pass. I feel sad for my friends who were celebrating their “last weekend of the summer” and are sending their kids back to school today.

      September on Cape Cod is so beautiful, the weather is gorgeous and the crowds are gone. I really can’t wait!

  3. We have lived in the New England area for years, and love the Fall. Something to look forward when summer gets over. But you are right, we can never get enough of summer.
